Support Sidemen is an initiative created by the team at Samanvaya to uplift families and communities in the impoverished region of Karangasem, Bali. Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, Support Sidemen has played a crucial role in providing essential aid to those who were left without support when tourism came to a standstill.
Since October 2021, we have made a meaningful impact, collecting over 25 tonnes of recyclable materials—plastics, cans, cardboard, steel, and more—directly from the village. This does not include the waste generated by our own operations. In return, we have distributed over 6 tonnes of rice to the community, fostering collaboration and gratitude while creating a cleaner, healthier environment.
Beyond waste collection and food assistance, we are committed to improving the quality of life for those in need. Most recently, we were able to provide two elderly residents with wheelchairs—one had suffered a stroke two years ago, while the other had been unable to walk due to a back injury from a fall ten years ago. These wheelchairs have given them newfound independence, allowing them to reconnect with their families, enjoy the outdoors, and reclaim simple joys.
Ongoing Support & Initiatives
During the COVID-19 crisis, many families in Sidemen lost their income. In response, Samanvaya launched Support Sidemen, raising funds through past guests and generous supporters. With these donations, we provided essentials such as rice, coffee, and blankets to those struggling to get by.
As the region rebuilds, we remain committed to sustainable and community-driven initiatives. Our Plastic Exchange program encourages responsible waste management by allowing locals to trade collected plastic for rice. In addition, we actively educate schoolchildren and villagers on environmental conservation, ensuring future generations understand the importance of protecting their surroundings.
We also recognise that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Through Support Sidemen, we fund local schools with essential supplies, sponsor training programs to equip individuals with employable skills, and assist families who would otherwise struggle to access education.
